Highland Park police chief says drones could aid in lakefront searches

Highland Park Police Chief Louis Jogmen says a drone could have aided first responders in their recent searches for a missing swimmer and kayaker who disappeared on Lake Michigan. The chief said drones could maximize life-saving efforts and reduce the risk to first responders during severe weather conditions on the shores of Lake Michigan.

An agency also may use drones during a disaster or public health emergency, or if a judge has approved a search warrant based on probable cause. Two bills that would have allowed drone surveillance for crowd monitoring at large events stalled during the spring session of the Illinois General Assembly.
